Human rights and media


On April 23 in Erbil, IMCK started with a five day workshop on human rights for the students of Media bo Khalk, the postgraduate course in journalism. Law lecturer and journalist Ruth Hopkins will teach the students more about human rights and its relevance to journalism.

In Kurdistan and the rest of Iraq journalists still face a lack of freedom of expression. Journalists, activists and demonstrators still get beaten, intimidated, and detained according to Human Rights Watch.

The workshop will provide information about the international legal framework of human rights, how human rights are relevant to social issues, daily life and the professional context of journalism. Analytical and a practical assignments will be given to the students.

The workshop is made available with the help of the Dutch embassy in Baghdad.

The first part of IMCK workshop on Knowledge Awareness of Oil and Gas finishes in Kalar Ali Ghazi from Nature Iraq explains how oil and gas impact on the environment and IMCK journalism trainer Khaled Suleiman helps the journalists develop story ideas.   Part 2 of the workshop is in Sulaymaniya in December.  Experts on  oil and gas will give information to help journalists become more specialized on the topic.

KDP women training

Gregor Niessen ,an expert on capacity building for political parties and NGO ’s started on March 15 a 5-day training for 24 women from the Kurdish Democratic Party ( KDP . The other days he will train together with Sabina Gazic , member of the Amsterdam City Council. They will make the women more aware of the political process and encourage them to strive to reach top positions within the KDP . They will talk with them about how to get this more visible role and how to get trough the ceiling.
